What is Basmati rice?
Basmati rice is a fragrant long-grain rice originating from India. The name “basmati” is pronounced as [‘bɑːsmət̪iː]. This name has its origins in Sanskrit and it means “fragrant.”
Basmati rice has the following characteristics:
- The grains are long, slender, and have a pure white color. The average length of a Basmati rice grain is about 7.5mm.
- When cooked, the rice spreads a light fragrance similar to that of pandan leaves.
- The rice grains will turn soft and fluffy when cooked.
